Trend Report: The Best of The Golden Globes Red Carpet

Hollywood’s brightest stars of film and television walked the red carpet last night at the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards. It was a big night for the talent behind La La Land, who took home six awards collectively, including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. Meryl Streep was honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, using her moment to quote the great Carrie Fisher: “As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once, ‘Take your broken heart, make it into art.’”

It was a golden night for entertainment, and a golden night for fashion, for sure. Here are my top five trends from the red carpet:

1. Millenial Pink

This is the exact shade of pink New York Magazine deems the ubiquitous colour amongst millennials this past year. Lily Collins looked regal in a Millennial Pink princess gown by Zuhair Murad Couture, which she paired with a thoroughly modern deep red lip. Claire Foy, who won for her depiction of young Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown was also spotted in the shade, in a shimmering Erdem number, as well as the likes of Carrie Underwood, Felicity Jones, Zoe Saldana and Angela Bassett.

2. The Throw-back

So far the 2010’s have been all about tapping into another era. Natalie Portman was pregnant in Prada, channeling Jackie O. in a sophisticated look straight from the 1960’s. Her chartreuse frock and pink lips are just as much on trend this year as they were in 1962. Harkening back to the 1920’s without looking costume-y, Drew Barrymore was radiant in silvery sequined flapper-inspired Monique Lhuillier gown. It was a big night for Donald Glover, winning for his show ‘Atlanta’. He took a major fashion risk and totally pulled it off with swagger in a custom Gucci brown velvet tux. It’s funky and ‘70s but not too over the top, and Glover wears it well.

3. The Plunging Neckline

Cleavage was taken to a whole new level this year, the open-chested look spotted on everyone from Kristen Bell in Jenny Packham, to Jessica Biel in Elie Saab Haute Couture, Sarah Jessica Parker in Vera Wang, Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren, and Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan.

4. The Bolo Tie Necklaces

The choker trend has evolved into long bolo tie-inspired necklaces seen around the collars of Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton, Emily Ratajkowski in Reem Acra and, Jessica Chastain in Prada.

Until the Oscars!

Yours,
