How To Stay Organized During Busy Season

It’s mid-January and you are already swamped with work, trying to play catch up after being a little slow to start at the beginning of the year. Maybe you were incredibly busy at the end of 2019 and thought, oh surely things will ease up in the new year! Yet here we all are… busier than ever. So here are 5 tips to help you stay organized in the busy season. (Which, let’s be honest, is all the time).

1. Write A To-Do List Daily (And Check It Off As You Go)

Start every day, or at least every week, with a to-do list of all that you need to get accomplished. Add to it as the day or the week goes on and don’t forget the most satisfying part- checking things off! Pro tip: start the list with something you have already done and cross it off to satisfy the achiever within you.

2. Block Sections Of Your Day Off For Emails

…and turn off notifications. No one can get anything done when they are constantly checking and responding to e-mails. Section off your day to focus on work and only check your inbox every 1-2 hours. If anything is urgent, someone WILL call you.

3. Keep Your Desk Clear

This one is easy, messy desk = messy mind. Clean off your desk to rid of distractions and have a clear mind.

4. Plan Ahead

If you know that you need to get something done by EOD, book time off in your calendar so no one can book you for a meeting and take away from your working time. Also, don’t forget to communicate with team members about your priority list so nothing gets dropped! Pro tip: if you work in an open-concept office, try booking yourself a meeting room for a couple of hours, if you need quiet to focus.

5. Don’t Multitask

This one is hard. In the digital age, it is tricky not to get distracted by multitasking and flipping through the many mediums we have. Try opening everything you will need to complete a task, while minimizing or closing other windows down. If you focus on one task at a time, I promise you will finish them faster than if you were multitasking!
